Area school districts should take advantage of Kansas Green Schools grant money to integrate environmental practices and environmental education in their schools. The free funds can help schools bring in conservation and environmental experts to talk to students about such topics as air and water quality, recycling and conservation. Public or private, K-12 schools can apply for the Green Schools grants, up to $4,500, now through April 15. The program, launched in 2008, is designed to help schools save money and reduce the amount of natural resources used in the operation of the school buildings. Louisburg Middle School is one of the local schools that has already taken advantage of the grant. Brian Biermann, LMS principal, said being a green school has allowed teachers to bring in programs about topics such as recycling and conservation that the students enjoyed. Public schools can set an example for the rest of the community by going green, and they should strive to save some greenbacks in a time when state funding is in question.
