The Miami County Republic, Osawatomie Graphic and Louisburg Herald in their upcoming Dec. 31 issues will take a look at the top stories that shaped the news and sports in 2008. The Jan. 2 Miami County Weekend edition will feature the best news and sports photographs from throughout our coverage area in 2008. The Dec. 31 and Jan. 2 issues not only provide us with an opportunity to reflect on the top stories of 2008, but also to think about some of the issues likely to affect readers in our coverage areas in the coming year. The economy likely will dominate some of the news. Fortunately, Miami County and the surrounding area have weathered the economic downturn better than some regions of the nation, but as we’ve documented in the past several months, some local residents are grappling with job layoffs and other hardships. Residents, organizations and churches also have proven they are more than up to the task of lending a helping hand to those in need in our communities. These shining examples of generosity should give all of us hope and optimism as we head into the new year.
